FORCES OF NATURE PAINTINGS
"So what led me to florals? Well, usually I'm travelling to Cornwall or Scotland getting my landscape inspiration. Of course, this year, travel has been difficult. Yet the pull of paint on paper and the mixing of colour are my passions and so I started making marks studying the daffodils on my studio table. I wasn't trying to create a still life - rather, the 'feeling' of rebirth, of Spring and it just fired me up with excitement and hope. Things had been tough at home with my family - same for everyone - and those yellows and curving stems and delicate spires of colour fed my soul. So I've been painting these since February - inspired by the force of Nature and her power to renew herself. Even when they fade, there is still beauty in the curling shapes and crispy forms. The more you look, the more you see. And they begin to appear as presences with their own personalities gazing back at me at my easel. The flowerman in York Market has provided a host of beautiful blooms. And now, in my garden, the irises are proudly displaying their sculptural forms - my dad's favourite flower - so that will be the next few paintings, I hope. Oh the smell, the colours - keeping my hand moving and my eye alive has resulted in this body of paintings. All works come from direct observation - what a joy!" - Lesley Birch 2021
