HOLDING SERIES - JUNE 2020
At the beginning of lockdown, I wanted to create beautiful landscapes and escape inside my head. Now, months on, I'm in limbo. Actually, I've been feeling that I am neither coming nor going - I have my grown-up son at home - he's autistic and it's hard to help him understand things. My frustration and feelings of being trapped may well echo his feelings, though he can never express any of this to me. Inbetween all this worry, I've been following my hand and heart as always, creating the pieces you see here - triggered by just that sense of being contained, hanging on and being in limbo. I call these 'Holding' pieces. The 'holding' motif refers to the inner world of my son, held in by his autism, but also it refers to the idea of being held in confinement by this virus. He cannot go out. He will not go out. He stays in his room and rarely ventures out even into the garden. In these paintings, the colours are in harmony, but the lines enclose, repeat or break out of confinement, expressing my son's insulated mind and my aching wish to hold, protect and at the same time free him.
All pieces here are mixed media on paper size 8 x 8 inches. They are presented floated onto a 10 x 10 inch mount board and protected with cellophane. Each piece costs £145 including p & p. If you would like your piece framed, then the cost is £200 including p & p. These artworks are part of the #artistsupportpledge where I pledge to support another artist by making a purchase. I am donating 10% of sales to The National Autistic Society. Thank you for your support.

The Artist Support Pledge is the brainchild of artist Matthew Burrows in response to the current pandemic in which artists have found themselves without work, teaching, technical support or gallery work. Exhibitions and sales have disappeared. And, so to alleviate this stress, Matthew has instigated the Artist Support Pledge. I think it's a grand idea and I have decided to take part. It's a simple thing:
Artists put up works for sale and if fortunate enough to reach £1000 in sales, they pledge to purchase a work by another artist for up to £200. This creates a dynamic culture and market, where all contribute, whatever their level of success.
This is a culture dependent upon the honesty and generosity of our artistic communities at every level.
You'll find the #artistsupportpledge on Instagram and lots of work by the many other participating artists.
