Jean's cottage

Come and stay in our cosy cottage, situated in Ulpha in the Duddon Valley, Cumbria.  Formerly Ulpha Post Office from 1890 to 2020 and before that a travellers' inn, the cottage is now a place to hide away, relax, walk, recharge yourself and breathe in the fresh air.  This is Wordsworth's favourite valley with the River Duddon nearby where you can swim on summer days - or have a dip in winter, if you're brave. You'll find Lesley's art on the walls plus pieces collected over the years.  The cottage can offer you quiet creative time to energise and awaken your senses. With views of The Caw and Stickle Pike, both accessible from your front door, the place is a walker's and cyclist's paradise.

Jean's Cottage - named after the owner's mother  -  has a home-from-home feel.  Situated at the end of three terraced cottages dating further back to the 1700s, the buildings were once a coaching inn for passing travellers.   The former Post Office has been lovingly renovated over a period of four years. You'll find original art on the walls amongst furniture, both modern and antique. With the comfort of underfloor heating beneath the huge 18th Century slates, you'll never get cold on those chilly lakeland nights.
Enjoy views of the fells from the bedrooms and downstairs rooms as well as the kitchen. In warm weather, you can take a cuppa outside to the front garden chairs and look towards Stickle Pike.

Surrounding Area
Right from the cottage front door there are woodland, river and fell walks. The nearest market town is 10 minutes away, in Broughton-in-Furness, with a butcher, baker and grocery and a petrol station.  There are two pubs with food within 4 miles.  Within 30 minutes' drive you can be at Coniston Water, where you can visit Brantwood, John Ruskin's House, tour his unusual gardens and have a scone and cuppa in the tearoom.  Or maybe you fancy a boat trip on the lake.  Also 30 minutes away is the quirky little town of Ulverston, birthplace of Stan Laurel of Laurel & Hardy.  Ulverston hosts the Printfest exhibition once a year, an arty, hugely well-attended event and Gillam's Tearoom is a must.  You'll find interesting little antique and arty shops, a fishmonger and a selection of pubs.  A favourite place for arty explorations is Yew Tree Barn where you can bury yourself in antiques and salvage after a coffee in their lovely cafe.  If you're a big foodie, you may want to visit the village of Cartmel, a gourmet's dream.
